C. James Li

Professor
Department Affiliation:
Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Nuclear Engineering
Education:
Ph.D., University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1987
B. Sc., National Taiwan University, 1980
Professional Background:
After completing a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and two years of military service, Li earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (1987). Before joining RPI, he has been, for six years, on the faculty of Department of Mechanical Engineering at Columbia University as an assistant professor and then an associate professor. He is a member of American Society of Mechanical Engineering and International Society of Micro-computer and Mini-Computer.
Research:
Current research interests include sensor based control of manufacturing processes/equipment, and mechanical diagnostics. The former entails the development of three components: a) Sensors to measure important variables of a manufacturing process or equipment, b) Diagnostic Algorithms to determine the state of the process or equipment using sensor outputs, and c) Controllers, such as P-integrator controllers, and learning fuzzy controllers, to regulate the process or equipment for quality assurance. Mechanical diagnostics, however, develops and utilizes synergistically linear/nonlinear modeling schemes and advanced signal processing techniques for detection, isolation, and severity assessment of incipient faults in mechanical systems. Also being pursued is the development of neural networks for nonlinear dynamical system modeling and robust pattern classification which are needed by both sensor based control of manufacturing processes/equipment, and mechanical diagnostics.
